Dear Friend,

I am going to cut right to the chase. Our treasured River has made a list. It is not a list we want to be on, but here we are. The entire Mississippi River was named the #6 Most Endangered River in American Rivers' recent report. More info is below. Let's use this moment to rally together and take the call to action.

Your May River Citizen newsletter also features upcoming events and a reminder that River Days of Action is coming June 7 - 12th! More events are added nearly every day. Get on the mailing list for updates! How will you participate? See you soon!

Mississippi Named on America's Most Endangered Rivers List

The Mississippi River supports millions of people and countless birds, fish, and other wildlife. Despite the importance of this river corridor, habitat is being degraded, new sources of water contamination go unchecked, wetlands continue to be drained and lost, and flood damages are escalating. Because of these factors, our Mississippi has been named the #6 Most Endangered River of 2022 American Rivers.

Thankfully, there are solutions, and you can make a difference.

The Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative (the MRRRI Act) will direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to work closely with other federal agencies, states, tribal nations, local governments, and non-governmental organizations to support projects along that River that:

  • protect clean water
  • create healthy habitats and flood-ready infrastructure
  • control aquatic invasive species

It is time we did more, not less, to protect our River. Make a difference in 30-seconds by telling Congress to pass the MRRRI Act today!

Boundaries Don’t Protect Rivers; People Like Victoria, Dean, Virginia, and YOU Do!

During Earth Month in April we shared stories from River Citizens who also work with Mississippi River Network member organizations. They shared their River stories as part of our fundraising effort - helping us get halfway to our goal of $2,500. It’s not too late, click here to make your gift. If just 50 people give $25 we’ll hit our goal to help protect and restore the River.

Why is Victoria worried about marshes? Read her story and find out!

Virginia thinks we have a historic chance to save the River. Do you?
