River Citizen,

Have you ever thought about how our Mississippi becomes so mighty?

This question led me to the Latin phrase donning most American coins: E Pluribus Unum; ‘Out of Many, One.’ To me, the River exemplifies this. As it flows, it grows, uniting the waters of 1.2 million square miles, including all or part of 32 states and two Canadian provinces. I don’t know if smaller tributaries (like Minnehaha Creek closest to me) know that they are responsible for making the Mississippi mighty. But I do know that the many small day-to-day actions we take grow into a powerful and united force.

This year, supported by the diversity and wisdom of 60+ Mississippi River Network member organizations, we recommit to working together with you, our 20,000-person strong River Citizen community, to be out of many; one. Let this be the year of steady, seemingly small action and care for our River. Let us see how mighty we become together as 1 Mississippi.

In solidarity and community,
Michael Anderson, Outreach & Engagement Manager, Mississippi River Network

Record Attendance for Gulf Hypoxia Meeting

Last month, River Citizens and Mississippi River Network (MRN) member organizations spoke up for the wellbeing of the River and all that depend on it. The graphic shows a breakdown of the December 2021 Gulf Hypoxia Task Force public virtual meeting. Reducing nutrient pollution, harmful algal blooms, and the Gulf Dead Zone (generated by the Mississippi River's outflow) is a top priority. Maisah Khan, MRN's Policy Director, is currently coordinating with meeting attendees to create opportunities for you to engage on this issue in 2022. Be on the lookout for more in the upcoming February River Citizen newsletter.
