| Dear Friend, What is the River? Is it the body of water flowing between the banks? Is the River the main stem or the entire watershed? How about a ribbon of wild and a home for so many? Or a symbol of both liberty and bondage? A resource to be harnessed? A relative to be in relation with? Like humans, can the River be multiple things at once? As our Mississippi River Network (MRN) continues preparing for our third annual River Days of Action (June 8 - 18, 2023), we are thinking a lot about you and what you want and need to continue deepening what the River means to you and the fun and impactful actions we can take together to create a healthier Mississippi River now and for future generations. So, friend, what does the River mean to you? Let me know by emailing me at manderson@1mississippi.org, and be sure to check out the updates and upcoming events below in your February River Citizen Newsletter! -Michael Anderson, Director of Outreach and Education, Mississippi River Network |

| | Feature Event: Screening of "Histories of Systemic Oppression in the Environmental Movement" Webinar |
| In celebration of Black History Month, join your fellow River Citizens on Wednesday, February 22nd, from 12 - 1 pm CT via Zoom for a screening of a recorded webinar on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in the environmental movement. |
| The webinar is titled Reckoning with the Past for a More Equitable Future: Histories of Systemic Oppression in the Environmental Movement and was presented to the Mississippi River Network and our members by leading equity practitioners, The Avarna Group, who describes the webinar as: "Conservation and environmental organizations have recently begun contending with the racial exclusion and injustice that defined their creation and much of their existence. This session explores environmental history and how it fits into the larger context of social history in the U.S.. Through a timeline of events through the early 20th century, the session will reveal that despite their intent, conservation was not a categorically benevolent force, and in fact harmed Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color across Turtle Island." | | Meetings on the Hill to Support Farm Bill and Conservation Programs |
| It's a Farm Bill year! The Farm Bill is passed every five years and is an important piece of legislation that determines what we eat, what farmers grow, who can access land and capital, and how all of that impacts our waterways and environment. Our Policy Director was in Washington D.C. last week as part of the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition’s winter meeting and Hill days, where folks met with decision makers like Congressman Tiffany (pictured) and Congressman Pocan, as well as Congressional staff from many Mississippi River offices. They talked about advancing land stewardship through conservation program funding and supporting beginning farmers’ access to land and capital! |
