River Citizens,

There's no way for me to know how this past year has impacted you. Please know that as the manager of the 1 Mississippi program, I think about you and our River Citizen community every single day and hope for your happiness. With Mississippi, we ground all of our efforts in the question: will this create a healthier Mississippi River for the land, water, wildlife, and people? At a time when many of you are probably ready to transition into the New Year, I am extending a quick note of gratitude for all the ways you showed up for the River this year - from taking the 10 River Citizen Actions, educating yourself, or even writing postcards for the River - thank you.

It's a big River and we are a big community at 20,000 River Citizens strong! Wishing you the best and we'll see you in 2021.

-Michael Anderson, Outreach and Engagement Manager, Mississippi River Network

Although from every state, our community of River Citizens is concentrated along the 10 main stem Mississippi River states. Improvement is in Reach by Chris Stangl

If you are a long-time River Citizen, you know sources of nutrient pollution include agricultural fertilizers and stormwater drainage and that an excess of nutrients spurs annual hypoxic (low to no oxygen) zones. IA/WI outreach coordinator, Chris, brings this massive-scale issue down-to-earth when working with his friend and rancher on reducing erosion and runoff thus increasing the local water quality.
