Happy Spring, Friend!

This past month, a tornado cross the Mississippi River (see River in the News below), while snow continued to pile up in other parts of the basin. For us River folk, it's on our minds...what will the Spring flood be like this year? With forecasters fearing rapid snowmelt, many communities are preparing for major flooding along our River and its tributaries.

Thankfully, there are things we can do to reduce the impact of flooding that also help people, land, water, and wildlife. Long-term solutions like reconnecting and restoring floodplains and wetlands are supported by incremental steps and actions that you can take in your day-to-day life. Be on the lookout this month for weekly emails that put a few of these steps and actions in your hands - all perfectly timed for Earth Month. Your actions matter. Together, we are making a difference for the River and our Earth!

- Michael Anderson, Director of Outreach and Education, Mississippi River Network

D.C. Fly-in Recap

In March, Mississippi River Network (MRN) staff and member organizations, representing all ten states the River flows through, met in Washington, D.C., for our annual fly-in. The three-day event included a rally, a march (pictured, top), and meetings with over 30 members of Congress and their staff. We advocated on behalf of you, our 20,000-person-strong River Citizen community, and the people, land, water, and wildlife of our treasured Mississippi River. Additionally, MRN submitted over 10 Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations requests as follow-ups to the meetings.

Check out the press conference recording featuring MRN's Executive Director, Kelly McGinnis; MRN's Policy Director, Maisah Khan; Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance's Program Director, Alex Keilty; and Healthy Gulf's Senior Policy Director, Matt Rota.

It was a tremendous fly-in, and we are grateful for your trust and support. We are also grateful for fellow clean water advocates that joined us on the Hill like the Great Lakes Healing Our Waters Coalition and Farmers for Climate Resilience.

The Mississippi River Network met with over 30 Congressional offices including Illinois Congressman Eric Sorenson.
